In Lean methodologies, waste is defined as anything that does not provide value to the customer. Value streaming mapping visualizes the process of providing a product or serve to discover where waste is and what is valuable. You can do this with a paper and pencil or use a software tool such as Visio.

While Lean is largely focused on manufacturing there are many applications for service organizations as well. Six Sigma doesn't play as well in service organizations although it too has its applications.

http://www.lean.org/Bookstore/ProductDetails.cfm?SelectedProductID=9

What I do

I'm currently consulting on a SAS 70 audit for a financial service firm. Dory was nixed because blue tangs require a 70 gallon tank, which was right out. We settled on a clown fish, a damsel fish, which looks a little like a blue tang, and a royal dottyback (because I wanted it). The 30 gallon aquarium with lighting, protein skimmer and pumps cost $500. The "live" rock and sea salt cost $236. The heater, hydrometer, the glass cleaner, and the test kit cost $60. We're waiting for the live rock to cure before adding live sand and tank cleaners (most likely hermit crabs). Last comes the fish. The damsel comes first because they are hardy and relatively cheap. With any luck the tank will be ready for Nemo by his birthday in June.

Speaking of meaning

There is a meaning based therapy founded by Victor Frankl I like a lot called logotherapy:

http://www.logotherapyinstitute.org/index.html

Here is an interesting site on meaning:

http://www.meaning.ca/index.htm

Here is another interesting alternative therapy:

http://www.todoinstitute.org/

Hello World!

Well everyone else it doing it so why not?
